The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba has challenged policemen to “be professional.” The IGP gave the charge today in Asaba, Delta State capital while addressing officers and rank and file policemen.
He cautioned that “don’t turn stop-and-search to the roadblock. Not every vehicle you should stop. When you suspect a vehicle, don’t ask for particulars. Let the occupant know in a civil manner why you stop the vehicle. Search the vehicle while you are at alert so that you don’t make yourself vulnerable.to attack”
On welfare, he assured the policemen of his commitment to their welfare. He disclosed that the insurance scheme for policemen is on gear too.
The IG also assured that “there will be cases when uniform will be provided.” Earlier, the state Commissioner of Police (CP) Ali Mohammed Ari, said, that his command is facing some challenges such as lack of enough tools to combat crime.
In his response, the IG said, the command should utilize whatever is available. But assured that the challenges will be looked into in due course. IGP Alkali who was once a CP of Delta State noted that, “areas of concentration in combating crime is Warri, Sapele and Ughelli. If you can work successfully in Delta State there is no state you cannot work.”
He noted that because of the proximity of Asaba to Onitsha in Anambra State there is the possibility of protests or demonstrations spilling over to Asaba.
In the overall assessment of the performance of Delta State police command, the IG commended the CP, officers, and rank and file.
