Benue Royal Father Debunks Nullifying Chieftaincy Titles On Tinubu, Akume

From Peter VANDE – Makurdi

The Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC), Benue State, has debunked allegations that it nullified chieftaincy titles that were conferred on President Bola Tinubu and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, by the Igede Traditional Council.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Makurdi on Wednesday, the
council which described the reports as “mischievous” and “misleading”, explained that the list of individuals proposed for conferment of chieftaincy titles did not include the names of the President and the SGF.

The IATC observed that it directed the suspension of conferment of chieftaincy titles on recipients by all Intermediate Area Traditional Councils within Idomaland, until it was duly considered and approved by it.

It also observed that it had earlier directed the First-Class Chief, His Royal Highness Ero Oga, to step down the conferment of titles on August 19, 2025, and reinforced this directive with an official declaration on 2nd September, 2025.

The traditional council also warned sponsors of misinformation to desist forthwith, noting that their actions amount to criminal mischief, just as it reminded the press not to allow itself to be used to undermine the integrity of the traditional institution.

The IATC reiterated its commitment to upholding the dignity of the throne, preserving the sanctity of Idoma customs, and supporting peace and development in Benue State and Nigeria at large.

The council further emphasised that the directive was not specific to the Igede Council alone, but to all traditional councils in Idomaland.
