The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Mr. Chris Ezike has said the command has detonated an Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDS) in Gelegele in Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.
Ezike made it known to newsmen in Benin City recently while parading some suspected criminals.
He disclosed that the command received a distressed call on Sunday at about 10am that an object suspected to be an Improvised Explosive Devices was planted in an oil well at Gelegele oil field in Ovia North EastLocal Government Area of the state.
Ezike said when the command got the call, they swung into action and led a team of Explosives Ordinance Detectives backed by Tactical Operatives to the scene.
According to the CP, a report issued by the EOD experts indicated that two objects suspected to be IEDS, placed inside two sack bags containing Amfo (mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel) were placed in an Oil Well head at Gelegele but the objects were yet undetonated and at a closer examination, it was discovered that it contained a strand of cortex, dylatine, power source and firing cable.
Mr. Ezike noted that the team was able to detonate it successfully.
Although no arrest has been made, he reassured the citizens of the state not to panic as the police he said, were on top of the security situation in the state. He however, urged the residents of the state to report any strange substances to the security agencies.
On the criminal suspects paraded, he said they will soon be charged to court as soon as investigations were completed.
