A reporter with PM NEWS Mr Taiwo Okanlawon who was covering the #EndSARS memorial protest at the Lekki Tollgate was beaten and harassed by policemen.
The policemen had fired teargas at the protesters, causing pandemonium. The reporter was doing his job when the police suddenly descended on him.
According to Okanlawon, “I was showing my ID card here but they don’t care.”
Earlier today Wednesday 20th October 2021, the police arrested a journalist with Legit TV for failing to produce his I.D. card.
Meanwhile, the publisher of Sahara Reporter Mr Sowore who was a presidential aspirant and an activist with other activists led the EndSARS protest in Abuja.
The situation at Lekku is tense causing traffic gridlock.
In a related development police in Osun State have arrested a journalist.
Reports said, the reporter, Sikiru Obarayese, DAILY POST correspondent in Osun was arrested for his presence at the End SARS protest venue.
Obarayese was to be charged to court despite identifying himself.
However, Police Commissioner of Osun State, CP, Wale Olokode, said he heard about the situation and has directed the withdrawal of the case.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) leadership in Osun has condemned the development.
A state government official expressed dismay about the overzealousness of the policemen.
“He identified himself. The attempt to emasculate journalists is an aberration”, he government official whose identity was not disclosed was said to have condemned.
