The immediate past controversial Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, escaped the sledge hammer of President Bola Tinubu three times before he was finally booted out of office on Tuesday February 24, 2026.
Discrete investigations by The SUPREME reveal that, Egbetokun was to be first fired on Friday November 15, 2024, but he escaped the sledge hammer of President Bola Tinubu.
His escape from being fired, was said to be as results of strong pleas from a household member of President Tinubu and from a few Aides.
His alleged atrocities which culminated into plans to relieve him of his plum position, was said to be his inefficiency in combating crimes, especially unabated rampant kidnappings that was spreading like wild fire to all regions of the country, with rampant payments of ransoms.
In addition, he was said to have stepped on toes of top politicians, and operated with tribal and regional sentiments.
We also learnt that, there were different complaints of official corruption from within the police and from sone members of the public.
He was allegedly accused of negligence to legal processes in tackling sensitive issues.
The SUPREME learnt that, as a result of his alleged inefficiency, and alleged official corruption, some top politicians and some business moguls mounted strong pressures on President Tinubu to replace him. Tinubu was said to had yielded, admitting that, “the IG was embarrassing him.”
His second escape from the sledge hammer, was in March last year 2025, on the day River States Governor Fubara was removed from office; and an emergency rule was installed in Rivers State.
Our discrete investigations revealed that, power brokers in Aso Rock had convinced President Tinubu to consider the political imbroglio in Rivers State as a priority than focus on replacing Egbetokun.
Egbetokun’s third escape from being sacked by President Tinubu, was said to be a day before Tinubu left for Brazil.
Tinubu was said to have pleaded with those who justified their reasons to replace Egbetokun to wait till he returned from Brazil.
However, the confidential plan to sack Kayode Egbetokun was said to had leaked to him, giving him ample opportunity to intensify lobby to allow him remain in office.
We reliably learnt that, among those Egbetokun seriously lobbied to persuade Tinubu to shelve his sack, is a top politician from Kaduna State. He is said to be highly respected by President Tinubu.
One of the last straws that broke Egbetokun’s spinal cord from 7th Floor of the Force Headquarter, was said to be his argument on the creation of state police, noting that state police will be misused by State Governors against perceived political opponents, and as such, it was not tenable. His alleged past atrocities were said to have finally given the nod to fire him. But the official reason was that, “he resigned.”
