The streets of Abuja went agog on Friday, July 24th, 2026, as the high and mighty, business moguls, politicians, media gurus, and top echelons of the Nigeria Police Force converged in their numbers to celebrate a living legend at 77.

The occasion was the 77th birthday bash of the former Inspector- General of Police and former Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), held at his Abuja residence.
What followed was a colorful display of love, respect, and admiration that brought traffic to a near standstill across Banex, Wuse 2 and Maitama axis.

It was a gathering of Who’s Who, from serving senior police officers to retired generals, from captains of industries to political heavyweights, the guest list read like a who’s who in Nigeria. Men and women in uniform, traditional rulers, and everyday citizens all trooped in to honour the man who many call “ father to all.”

The atmosphere was electric. There was music, thanksgiving, and heartfelt tributes as speakers took turns to eulogize Chief Okiro’s decades of service to the nation and pray for more years in good health.

Chief Sir (Dr) Mike Mbama Okiro is loved across divides for three things: *humility, simplicity, and a kind heart.

At 77, he remains a reference point for leadership with character.

During his tenure as IGP and later as PSC Chairman, he was credited with reforms that professionalized the Force and prioritized officer welfare.

But beyond office, it is his philanthropy that has endeared him to many. Over the years, he has quietly helped thousands from scholarships for indigent students to empowerment for widows and support for police families.

“He doesn’t carry titles on his head,” a guest said. “At 77, he still treat everyone the same, from a Constable to a CEO. That is why we are all here.”

A Birthday to Remember!
The birthday bash was more than a party. It was a national thanksgiving for 77 years of grace, service, and impact. Prayers were offered for long life, good health, and continued wisdom for the elder statesman.

As the night ended, one thing was clear: Abuja came alive not just to celebrate a birthday, but to celebrate a life of service.

In a country where leadership is often tested, Chief Sir Mike Mbama Okiro stands out as a model of humility in power, and service beyond office.

Remarkably, Okiro while in power as IGP, conceptualised the Amnesty Programme for the Niger Delta, to late President Musa Yar’Adua, who did not hesitate to approve Okiro’s proposal.
Today, the Amnesty Programme has brought respite to the region, that was once infiltrated by armed militants.
His service to the Nation and to humanity are indelible.
