Rivers State Emergency Rule: Okiro Calls For Caution, Dialogue

From Haruna Tula – Abuja

Former Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Sir Mike Okiro, has urged all parties involved in the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, to exercise caution and respect for human rights.

In a statement on Tuesday March 19, 2023, the former IGP who is also from Rivers State, expressed concern about the political impasse that has plagued the state for nearly two years. He called on all warring factions to sheath their sword, and engage in peaceful dialogue to find a resolution that benefits all parties involved.

Sir Mike Okiro stressed on the need for unity, dialogue, and respect for human rights in order to overcome the current crisis in Rivers State. He also reminded the public of his successful efforts in conceptualising the Amnesty Programme for the Niger Delta region in 2009, which has brought commendable peace to the region, after many years of militancy that had crippled economic activities.

As a concerned citizen of Rivers State, Sir Mike Okiro emphasized the importance of working together as a community to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens during this challenging time. He called for a peaceful and sustainable dialogue that will ensure permanent solution, that will uphold the principles of democracy and respects for rights of all individuals.

His statement stems from the state of emergency declared in Rivers State on March 18, 2023.
He expressed his willingness to work with other elder statements and stakeholders in the state to ensure a lasting solution to the unrest.

It will be recalled that about two weeks ago Okiro muted an idea of forming a committee of elders and stakeholders in Rivers State to address the political impasse.

He called on all parties involved to comply strictly with the directives from the President and work towards a peaceful resolution that benefits the state and its people.
